If you’ve been trading forex with MetaTrader 4 for a little while, you’re probably pretty familiar with the platform’s basic functionality, creating charts, opening and closing trades etc, but there are a range of other cool features the platform offers too. In this quick piece we’ll go over a few of the features you may have missed in MT4 and help you to improve your workflow and get the most of out of this great platform.
Saving and loading chart templates in MT4
Finally got your chart looking the way you like it and ready to start sharing all your “chart art” with your twitter following? Well you don’t want to have to go through that process again and again for each chart you make – what a waste of time! To save a chart template simply right click on your chart and select Template -> Save Template. Once you’ve done that, just click over to a new chart and Template -> Load Template – easy right? One thing to remember here is it’s a good idea to get everything exactly the way you like it before saving the template, that will save you the hassle of reloading templates on 20 different symbols every time you make a change.
Saving and loading chart profiles on the MetaTrader 4 platform
Charts templates are cool, but maybe you want to have one set of templates for trading the Asian session and a completely different set for trading London and New York? Or perhaps you want to have one view for all the forex majors, with separate views for all your minors, crosses and an overview of the equity markets? MT4 makes this simple through it’s profile feature.
Set up your standard set of charts and then go to File -> Profiles -> Save As to save your first profile. Then simply go back to the Profiles menu and select default to get started making your next profile. Now when you want to switch profiles all you have to do is go back to the Profiles menu and switch over to the one you need. MT4 profile take the pain out of watching multiple markets!
Showing/hiding objects and indicators in MT4
Scalp trend-lines in the Asian session and swing trade in Europe? You’re not going to want all those 5m trend-lines messing up your longer time frame charts. To hide an object or indicator from a particular time frame, simply right click on it and select the properties option. Now just click on the Visualization tab, deselect Show on all the timeframes and check each time frame you want the object or indicator to display on. No more messy charts!
Great right? There’s actually an even easier way though, you can do this the moment you draw a line or add an indicator by turning on the Show properties after creation setting in the Objects tab in MT4 settings – give it a go!
